How do you become a Downwindfoiler?

With the right approach

The topic of SUP downwind foiling is extensive and combines several sports. It was therefore a challenge to create a course format that promises success. SUP downwindfoiling is still being approached incorrectly by many water sports enthusiasts and the wrong equipment is being purchased. Frustration is therefore inevitable. As a result, the sport is dismissed as „difficult to learn“, just like wingfoiling was at the beginning. The rapid progress made by our students shows that this is not the case.

Unlike other course formats, this course is not „done“ within a few days, so you can try it out yourself afterwards until it works. The decisive factor is the support after the various course units. Only if your coach is also available after the courses can you achieve rapid learning success. Below we look at the 5 pillars of downwind foiling, on which everything is based. With the right approach, you can achieve rapid success!

„SUP downwind foiling is difficult to learn? Nonsense. You just have to get it right! The mental component plays a big role.“

We equip you completely

Previous knowledge of water sports

What previous experience do you need as a SUP downwind foiler?

Before we start, we will check your skill level. Downwind foiling is a mix of SUP and pump foiling. If you have previous experience, you have an advantage. However, the basics are enough. Depending on how advanced you are, you can join our courses at different levels. Check the „skill level“ in the box at the bottom right.

  • Wingfoiling is recommended as a learning tool and prior knowledge is helpful but not essential.
  • Previous experience in foiling should be available.
  • Are you already good at pumping? Perfect! Downwind foiling is very similar to pump foiling. Basically, it's pump foiling in the wave!

  • Wingfoiling is helpful as a learning tool but not necessary
  • Foiling experience available

1. UNIT

Downwind basic course

  • Flatwater Paddleup Training SUP Foil

Book the first session as a fully-fledged beginner's course for flatwater paddle-up training or as the first part of our downwind foil training. We start with a round of dry training and a relaxed introduction to the equipment.

We explain exactly what is important and introduce you to all common board types. If you want to learn downwind foiling, you first need to understand the sport. Once you have booked the complete course, we will create an individual 3-month training programme for you after the course! Personalised to your skills.

We guarantee to get you on the foil: at the end of the course, we will set up an electric winch for you and pull you up with it. You'll get to know what it feels like to foil on a SUP foil board with the appropriate foils. Attention experienced foilers: You think you don't need that? Wrong! Let us show you why! The winch allows us to simulate various launching and pumping techniques. Guaranteed to be worth it!

Riding the stern wave

In our third unit, we start with the boat. Why? You learn to ride waves very quickly behind a boat. A boat offers the perfect conditions for understanding waves and how to ride them correctly. The stern wave is perfect for this: a wave like in a laboratory.

We will also practise „paddling“ the wave together. In this session, you will gain a deeper understanding of positioning in the water and how to ride waves correctly. This will really help you progress and can be repeated several times.

Contents: Pulling behind the boat and stern shaft
Duration: 2 hours
Precinct: Baltic Sea with boat
Conditions: Calm to light wind
Start: 1 week after 2nd unit at the earliest
(duration: 2h) € 349,-

A lot is happening in the SUP downwind foil market

Development is progressing fast!

What is topical today will no longer be tomorrow. In this case, however, it really has nothing to do with the surf industry's clever marketing strategies. The sport is so young that events have come thick and fast over the last two years.
Since last year, a consensus has emerged on the choice of material for downwind foiling/flatwater launching. This means that the time is ripe for a well thought-out training format. We now know exactly which boards are used in which area. A lot has also happened with the foils. Of course, our skill level has also developed enormously in parallel and we are passionate downwind foilers ourselves.

Who is SUP downwind foiling for
an issue at all?

For advanced foilers!

Have you ever had the wing in the „freefly“ while riding the waves? Of course! Because that's exactly why you're interested in downwind foiling. The feeling is breathtaking! Downwinding with just a paddle in your hand takes it to the next level. The surfing feeling is even more minimalist with a clear field of vision to the front. One wave after the next. Thousands in a row! You harness the energy of the sea.
With our unique training programme and the right training tools, you will make rapid progress. We have optimal downwind foil conditions on Fehmarn.

But of course! Our courses can also be booked individually. Check everything out in the first session. If you like it, we can always expand.

Generally no! SUP downwind foiling is not difficult to learn. The context in which you ask the question is always very important. Where do you set the standard? What is easy for one person with previous knowledge is difficult to learn for another. Much more important: How do I approach the topic correctly? SUP downwind foiling is not a foil sport that you learn first and foremost. You should already have a good knowledge of foiling beforehand.

We have a lot of downwindfoil material at the start. Slim and normal SUP boards from F-One, Starboard, Duotone, Vampires, AFS, custom boards and Kalama Barracuda DW Boards! Foils from F-One, AFS, SABFOIL (e.g. Leviathan)

When is the best time to start SUP downwind foiling? Firstly, you should have some previous knowledge. A good preparation is pump foiling, for example. Wingfoiling is also essential for a quick learning process. If you have already mastered these two disciplines, you can start straight away. SUP downwind foiling has little to do with classic stand up paddling, but is more akin to pump foiling and wing foiling. The paddle is also used a lot, but not as often. The right paddling technique is also important for learning success, but much more important is balance on the board and wave reading.

So you're longing for the vastness of the sea, want to be even more independent, to glide down the wave completely free? Then the time is right. Then it's time to switch to SUP downwind foiling! Come to us, Wingfoil Surf School Fehmarn, and we'll help you get started!

What is the best way to start downwind foiling? The best way to get started is with a course at Wingfoil Fehmarn! We'll help you to get started easily. Check out our many blog posts about downwind foiling. Take a look at our SUP downwind foiling courses here on the site. There's something to suit everyone. HERE

What training methods are there for SUP downwind foiling? There are a few good ways to prepare for SUP downwind foiling. One of these is pump foiling. It's not important to break the 2-minute mark when pump foiling. It is much more important to build up a routine so that you learn to control large foils. The safe control of large spans will help you later in the waves. You can also practise a lot in shallow water beforehand. You don't necessarily need to master a flat water start. Build up a routine for the movement sequence so that it works all the better later in the wave. SUP downwind foiling is not difficult to learn, you just have to approach it correctly.

Save money with SUP downwind foiling? Yes, you can! Through a good course with important information that doesn't lead to you buying double and triple material. Downwind foiling doesn't have to be expensive. A professional course saves you time and money! Downwindfoiling is a very complex subject where every piece of information can save you money. What kind of foil do I use for downwind foiling? Well, that's relative and depends on many factors. We'll answer it for you in the SUP downwind foil course. What mast length is suitable for SUP downwind foiling? This is also very important and we will answer it for you. What kind of board is right for me? You can try it out with us first!

Choosing the right material for SUP downwind foiling is very important and decides on frustration or success. Test a large selection of long boards with us so that you can find the right board for you; with the right volume for your body weight.

That depends entirely on the waters. When exactly will the energy last? This can be from 25 knots to 5 knots. You always have to take several factors into account. For example, how long did the sea / lake have to build up its wave energy? How deep is the water? Is there a groundswell that theoretically runs through even when there is no wind at all (depending on the location)? To get an answer to the question, you need more information. And if that were not enough, it now also depends on the SUP downwindfoiler's driving skills. The better you can drive, the less energy is needed in the sea! Here on Fehmarn, we can already ride really great downwinders at 5-10 knots!
